Believed to be the original home of the Cajun and Acadian people living in North America, the charming Poitou-Charentes region has historical and family attractions.  

Getting there

There are four airports in Poitou-Charentes. The two main airports, La Rochelle and Poitiers, have direct flights to and from the UK.

If you arrive by ferry, the drive is pleasant but long, taking approximately 6 ½ hours from Calais. If you want to travel by train, take the Eurostar to Lille and then change to the TGV which will take you directly to Poitiers.

Sightseeing

A guide book is recommended for this region since it contains so many museums, churches and places of interest.

The New World Museum (Musée du Nouveau-Monde) in La Rochelle is generally regarded as one of the best of its kind. A great selection of exhibits and a well stocked restaurant that serves lunch make this attraction well worth a visit.

If you have a head for heights, a traip to the Tour de la Lanterne in La Rochelle is a must. The history of this tower is unique as it was previously used as a lighthouse and jail. The climb to the top provides fabulous views.

Families

Futuroscope at Chasseneuil-du-Pointou is an amusement park, movie theatre and science museum all rolled into one. Breathtaking shows, interactive displays and images on giant screens will stimulate all your senses and provide you with an unforgettable experience.

The Aquarium de Rochelle is the most popular attraction in La Rochelle. Here, you will find enormous aquariums full of fish from all over the world. The shark tank must be seen to be believed, and the guided tour finishes off in a recreated rain forest. Decorated to inspirez a feeling of calm and tranquillity, this is a great place to visit. 

A trip to Royan should include the La Palmyre Zoo.  Considered to be one of the best zoos in France, allow a full day to visit as there is so much to see. The giant tortoises are amazing and kids will love being able to feed the animals, particularly the elephants. Expect to spend quite a while watching the primates as they are natural comedians and put on quite a show. Don't forget to bring your camera! 

Adults

Poitou-Charentes is home to Cognac country, with two of the most famous brands in the world being made here: Martell and Hennessy.

Take a trip to the Hennessy warehouse and learn how the cognac is produced. A short boat ride will take you to the company's museum and boutique. The grounds have been lovingly landscaped. You can see the full production method through to tasting the finished product.
