Getting there

There are direct flights to Nice from most airports in the UK. If you get the ferry over to Calais, it's a long but pleasant drive. You can also ride the Eurostar to Paris and then take another train directly to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

Sightseeing

As one of the most famous tourist areas in the world, there is an abundance of sightseeing in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur that needs to be fit between lazy days by the pool and time spent on the glorious beaches.

There are many towns dotting the coastline that deserve mention, including St Tropez where the rich and famous hang out, Nice with its luxurious hotels, the pretty town of Antibes and Cannes which is home to the film festival.

One of the best places to visit in this region is the magnificent principality of Monaco. The magnificent cathedral houses the grave of Princess Grace. Thousands of people have visited the grave to pay their respects and light a candle in her memory. Until his death, Prince Rainier placed a fresh red rose at her grave every morning, a tradition that is now upheld by her children. The changing of the guard at the beautiful palace is also a sight to behold, and a trip down the hill to Monte Carlo is a must, if only to take in the luxury and opulence. Why not stop off in a cafe and try and do a bit of star spotting, there is always someone famous there.

The Gorges Du Verdon is one of Europe's most beautiful natural features, running some 25 km in length and 700 metres in depth. A kayak trip along the gorge would be a highlight of your trip.

The historic perfume factory at Grasse is another worthwhile excursion. One of Grasse's oldest buildings, this factory sits in the heart of the old town. As a tribute to the great French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the company was renamed Parfumerie Fragonard in 1926. The factory is open every day with free guided tours through the fascinating procedures necessary to make their products. There is also a museum where you can see over 3000 years of perfume making history.

Families

Kids will probably want to spend every day on the wonderful beaches. If you can get them off the sand, there are plenty of other attractions to enjoy in this region.

This region has two great water parks: Aqualand at Fréjus or Aquasplash at Marineland in Antibes. Both of these attractions have a wide variety of pools, slides and waterfalls to guarantee a lot of fun and laughs.

Fréjus is also home to a wonderful zoo that you can browse at your leisure and enjoy all the animals on display.

Adults

Known as the playground of the rich and famous, the nightlife in this region is something else. Nightclubs, casinos and show bars can be found along the coastline.
