How much do Flights to Corsica from the UK Cost?

Flights to Corsica
Last updated: 31 May, 2012

There are direct flights from most major UK airports to the airports in Corsica. Larger planes fly either to Campo dell'Oro in Ajaccio in the south-east or Poretta in the north-east at Batista. Gatwick is generally the most popular outbound UK destination, followed by Manchester. Since the island is not that big, driving around can be quite fun. If you are not in a hurry, simply take your choice of arrival airport while bearing in mind the cost of car hire.

The code for the Batista airport is BIA. EasyJet, Alitalia, Air Corsica and Air France all fly here. If you become lost while returning the hire car, the coordinates are 009° 29' 9'' E / 42° 32'57'' N.

The airport in Ajaccio is coded AJA and is the larger of the two airports. The only UK company flying here is EasyJet and the coordinates are 008° 48′09″ E / 41° 55′26″ N.

What About Travelling by Ferry?

Ferries to France can be a fun travel option if you enjoy a short sea cruise. If you have time to do the sums, you could save quite a bit of money taking your own car on the ferry.

There are two things to remember though: it's a long way down south to France from Manchester or Edinburgh, and a turn of bad weather can result in seasickness. You may want to consider flying, especially if you are in a hurry or on a tight program.

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost will depend on how and when you'd like to travel. Unlike accommodation where you can get the best deals by booking late, the basic principle here is to book early and bear in mind the unseen add-on costs of some operators. In some cases, it may be best to fly from major UK airports with big-name airlines and new aircraft.

Rates will depend on the season, but try using comparison sites such as Skyscanner.net to find the best deals.

Hiring a Car

Many popular car hire firms operate in Corsica from Ajaccio and Batista, including Hertz and Europcar. Be careful to check for hidden costs such as for insurance excesses and things like extra miles. Here are two examples of Europcar rates, again in June and collected from Batista airport, subject to a raft of terms and conditions:

  •   VW Polo (1 Day)   –   €126.50
  •   VW Polo (7 Day)   –   €379.99

Our assumptions included a single driver aged over twenty, with at least one year on their driver licence.

What about a Package Deal?

Firms like Thomas Cook offer some amazing all-inclusive deals that include flights to Corsica, car hire and accommodation. All airlines have agreements with car hire firms and many campsites have deals with local suppliers. If visiting outside of the peak summer months, you can save yourself a great deal more money too.

What's Best?

Choosing the best way to get to Corsica depends on many factors. Do you mind flying? Do you fancy a ferry cruise? How much is your budget and how much time do you have? There are so many combinations of travel arrangements that there is no one-fits-all answer - except that it always pays to travel out of season.

A holiday in Corsica can be the fulfilment of a lifetime dream. You get what you pay for and there's always a reason why some forms of travel are a little cheaper. The safest option is to stick with well-known names with representation in the UK just in case you have a problem. And when deciding your budget, always plan on paying average prices.
